If you walked into a city, a small town, or a village, how would know if this place lived within a state, and how would you know if that state was effective or mattered in people's lives?
I'm doing my PhD in African politics. Trying to make sense of it all, I've started putting random thoughts and questions down on paper. I spend most of time on themes of democratization, decentralization, and the state.
